Statistics show that 1 in 8 Americans struggle with food insecurity every day. Over the past year United Way 211 has received over 2200 calls regarding food assistance in Bartholomew County alone. These calls include inquiries for food pantries, hot meal sites, summer food programs and home delivered meal programs. In addition, United Way 211 has registered over 1200 families already this year for holiday food assistance. Food is a basic necessity and without community resources, families in Bartholomew County would go without.
That’s why we have Empty Bowls and why we need your help! Empty Bowls is an annual event that seeks to help end the fight against hunger. Guests are invited to a simple meal of soup and bread, including free entertainment by The Banisters, on February 1, 2014, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Central Middle School. By just buying a meal ticket, one can help contribute to the local food banks. Guests are also invited to purchase a handcrafted bowl that they can take with them as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. Community members make and donate the homemade soups, breads, and desserts, as well as volunteer and serve the food.
We keep our costs very low so that the food banks of our area are able to benefit. Last year, our net income after expenses was over $10,000, which was divided between Love Chapel, Hope Community Food Bank, Eastside Community Center, Horizon House and Turning Point. Since 1999 we have been able to raise and distribute over $130,000 to our area food banks. With recent government cuts, the above agencies are in desperate need of support.
You can also contribute by becoming a sponsor of the event. Contributions can be sent to the following. Checks made payable to Empty Bowls.
