Statistics show that 1 out of 8 Americans struggle with food insecurity every day. Millions of people have lost their jobs during the most recent recession and over 8,000 people in Bartholomew County alone currently receive food stamps. Unfortunately, hunger is a very real problem in our community.
The 17th annual Empty Bowls is taking place Saturday, January 31, 2014 at Central Middle School at 5:30pm. Local favorites, The Banisters, are the entertainment this year! Empty Bowls is an extraordinary and inclusive community event. Hundreds of our neighbors make and contribute soups, breads, and desserts. Many more give their time and energy to help at the supper- setting up, serving, busing, washing up, and cleaning up. Each year they come back!
We keep our costs very low so that the food banks of our area are able to benefit. Last year, our net income after expenses was $12,000, which was divided between Love Chapel, Hope Community Food Bank, Eastside Community Center, and Turning Point. Since 1999 we have been able to raise and distribute over $150,000 to our area food banks.
We hope that you will help us this year by donating soup and/or bread, as you have in the past.
In any case, do join us on January 31st for an evening of good food, good company, good music- all for a great cause. We can all help end hunger here in Columbus- one bowl at a time.
